Born and raised in Pretoria, Sunnyside, Thato Mothobi has embarked on a journey in the art industry to fulfill his true potential as an artist. Thato Mothobi is a multidisciplinary artist currently enrolled in his second year at the University of Pretoria. He developed a passion for visual arts, which led to him receiving the "Top Performance in Visual Art for Academic Year 2022" in the Madibeng region. The same ambition drove him to pursue additional studies at the University of Pretoria, where he aspired to learn more and improve his skills. The context of his works is based on addressing South African social challenges, socio-economic issues and mostly the citizens of all levels of the social stratification, so the field of his work is exposed to the national eye and the documenting of real-life experiences. Being a citizen in South Africa and being exposed to the levels of social stratification allows Mothobi to express his experiences as well as others into the process and concept of his work which is being able to initiate storytelling and being a voice for the voiceless, also targeting the emotional depth of the work to convey the message. Works from his Digital Photography, Video Project, Wood Sculpture and Experimental Painting emphasis this recurring theme. Thato Mothobi's desire in storytelling through the Linocut medium, from paying attention to intricate details and textures to basing his concept ideas on the reflection of life as a South African can be seen in his distinctive work, “Mahadi” from 2023 which was selected in the Sasol Top 100 in 2024 and displayed at the Pretoria Arts Museum.
